Aging and dying is a major part of a person’s life, even though no one in this world knows quite how long they are going to live or when they are going to die. The process of aging is defined as “a progressive decline in the maximum functional level of individual cells, whole organs, and entire organisms”. As people get older, the body begins to slowly lose its degree of wellness, which includes physical and mental declines. Generally, most people reach their prime for physical capabilities during their twenties and thirties, but they can also reach it later on in life. People with osteoporosis shrink in height over a period of time and tend to develop a humped over posture. Some individuals suffering with osteoporosis often experience low back and neck pain from small fractures occurring in the spinal bones. The risk of developing osteoporosis is heightened by a family history of osteoporosis, lifestyle factors (including smoking, alcohol use, lack of exercising, being thin or small-framed, lack of calcium and vitamin D, consuming carbonated cola drinks), medical conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, taking certain medicines, and having certain surgeries. There are several options of treatment for osteoporosis, including various medications such as bisphosphonates, calcitonin, hormone replacement therapy, parathyroid hormone, and raloxifene. Exercise is the best thing to prevent and treat osteoporosis and it reduces bone fractures occurring from osteoporosis. Some recommended exercises are weight-bearing exercises, such as walking, playing tennis, or dancing. Resistance and balance exercises are also highly recommended. People suffering from osteoporosis should have a healthy diet high in calcium and vitamin D. Osteoporosis is devastating, but it does not have an effect on life expectancy.
