Barbie Doll

The piece of literature I chose to analyze was Barbie Dolls by Marge Piercy. This poem is about a young girl who goes through the normal stages of female bodily development. As the “girlchild” becomes a female she has an ugly nose and fat legs. She tries to be accepted by society but they deny her because of her looks. After a numerous attempts of trying to fit in she gives up. “Girlchild” has surgery and almost risks her life all to make her self pretty. No matter how hard she tried the only thing “everyone saw was a fat nose or thick legs”(line 11). They didn't see the fact that she was healthy or intelligent. After the young girl tried so hard “her good nature wore out like a fan belt”(lines 15-16). When Piercy uses the expression “wore out like a fan belt” it shows that the girl must have tried really hard and been through a lot because it takes a lot to ware out a fan belt. To me , this means she underwent cosmetic surgery to make herself look “pretty”. I would assume this because the author says a putty nose which is molded and fake. In the end the “girlchild” ended up in a casket all because of the want to be accepted by people around her and look beautiful. In the end as people view her in the casket the say “Doesn't she look pretty ?(line 23)” As human beings , we change ourselves to live up to societies expectations of beauty . We as female are willing to cut off an arm or a leg and almost kill ourselves to become what people perceive is beautiful. All to be praised upon by men or be hated by other females for our beauty when our true beauty is inside of us. We are
