Biblical and Secular Models of Counseling
Deciding how to model your counseling practice is one of the fundamental issues needing to be addressed when a counselor is choosing to begin a successful career as a licensed counselor. There are many different theories, strategies and methods to choose from when developing the foundation of your models, but all must adhere to the ethical standard of behavior set forth by the American Counseling Association. The best way to establish a model of counseling is to compare and contrast several different counseling practices and carefully evaluate their individual methods, goals, premises, strategies and theories.

This specific identification of problem areas would be a possible matter of concern, especially when related to the option to withhold information, as cited in the American Counseling Association Code of Ethics, under the section identified as E.5.d. (ACA, 2006). Whereby, the process of identifying the root problem, in certain instances and situations, could hurt the counselee’s feelings and thereby possibly cause harm to the counselee’s self-esteem. The American Counseling Association Code of Ethics makes an allowance for the withholding of diagnosis and testing results, if by providing this information, the counselor could in some way cause harm to the counselee or any other person (ACA, 2006).
Biblical counselors are encouraged by Crabb to further promote the counselee in the areas of knowing and developing their own self-worth as well as discovering and realizing the significance of who they are in this life (Crabb, 1977). This is referred to in Crabb’s counseling model as an opportunity for a level one position of counseling. Likewise, the Rogerian Theory , offers a similar approach in recommending unconditional positive regard toward the counselee in his model of counseling. Crabb (1977), in his book titled, Effective Biblical Counseling, says that most individuals, who are hurting badly, can be helped when approached by those who reflect a warm, genuine concern and interest by a caring individual.
