One of today’s most asked beverage world questions; Coke or Pepsi? My goal is to tell you why Coca-Cola is the worldwide leader in producing and distributing non-alcoholic beverages. Coca-Cola was founded in 1886, by Pharmacist, John Stith Pemberton. Initially Coca-Cola was used as a remedy for illness, selling for five cents. Things have changed quite a bit since the introduction of Coke, for instance, Coca-Cola now produces over 3,500 products in 200 countries. This fact alone shows the global grasp of Coca-Cola. These are ways that Coca-Cola is the leading producer, marketer, and distributor of non-alcoholic beverages. This is a very large corporation in terms of size, from employees to their market capitalization. At the end of the 2010 fiscal year Coca-Cola had 2.27 billion outstanding shares. With a stock market price of sixty eight dollars at the end of that period, it produces a market capitalization of 154.36 billion dollars. This amount puts them at number one in the soft drink beverage company surpassing Pepsi-Cola Company by a fifty seven billion dollar margin. Having such a high market capitalization figure can mean that the company is experiencing slower growth but for investors this means it comes with less risk. Coca-Cola would be considered a “large cap” company, meaning it is relatively stable and a secure investment. Coke is ranked 245 out of the Fortune 500 in annual ranking provided by CNNMoney. In 2010, they had 139,600 employees working with their logo on the polo. For company with more than 150,000 less employees than its competitor Pepsi, it holds nearly double the soft drink industry market share of it with 17%. After comparing the income statements from 2010 between Pepsi and Coke we find that Pepsi produces twenty-two billion more in annual revenue than Coca-Cola.
