There are many focal points we can view food for. The majority of people view food as fuel to conduct our daily task and activities. It is obvious that food is necessary for survival but it extends beyond just fuel for the body. Eating or not eating foods is a personal act in which we symbolically consume our identity. We are what we eat. It communicates to others our beliefs, culture, social background and experience; it shapes our outer appearance and our health. According to American cookbook author, teacher and television personality, James Andrew Beard, “ Food is a common ground, a universal experience” The role that food plays in shaping our identity is something we all share, but it is also something we use to set us apart from each other. People are overlooking the overall meaning food holds, therefore, people should be more aware that they are greatly defined by the choices in our food and how it constructs our identity.
Eating a healthy breakfast defines who you will be throughout the day. The phrase, “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day” is emphasized so much throughout our life, but people are ignoring the significance of starting their days with a full rejuvenating meal. According to the Healthy Children website, about 8 to 12 percent of school-age children pass on breakfast entirely, and among adolescents, the rates are even higher, with a percentage of 30.
