While it can be tempting to wait until you have an uninterrupted block of time to work on your grant, we recommend instead that you make the most of small blocks of time. This strategy has three advantages. One, it is significantly easier to find 20 minutes on even the busiest weekdays, which makes it easier to form a productive and reliable habit. Two, you more easily recall where you left off so you can quickly build momentum on your previous efforts. And three, you will be making meaningful progress towards your research goals amidst your other responsibilities much sooner than if you wait until you “have the time.”
Because this can be such a paradigm shift for many scholars, here are practical tips for making the most of small blocks of time.
1. Set aside at least 15-20 minutes 5 days a week. Some prefer to schedule this time on the calendar to guard the time against interruptions and keep a commitment. Some find that scheduling this time minimizes interruptions and makes it a habit. Others prefer to make use of small blocks of time as they arise during each day – choosing to work on research during time that would otherwise be spent checking email or surfing the web.
2. It is important to stick with this approach consistently. Commit to working on your research during this time, even when, and most especially when, you don’t feel inspired, would rather be doing other things, or feel like the work ahead of you is too daunting.
