Social Norms in today’s Society
“Thou shall not commit adultery.”, “Thou shall honor thy mother and thy father.” These are words that some are taught at a very young age in church or even at home. We are brought up knowing that these are not things that are acceptable in society and that there is a punishment of some sort, rather that be a religious punishment or a punishment that is held against you in the court of law. The knowledge of a law that is written and even not written in legal form are known as norms. Norms are the established behavior maintained by society (Schaefer). Now let’s look at a military stand point on this matter. The Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ), adultery is actually not listed as an offense, however is actually prosecuted under Article 134. Article 134 prohibits conduct which is of a nature to bring discredit upon the armed forces, or conduct which is prejudicial to good order and discipline (Powers). So if you think about it in the military, adultery is actually an informal, but has some formal means to it. Granted, it may not come straight out and say that you are not to commit adultery it still states that conduct of any nature that would bring discredit upon the armed forces is punishable; however, adultery is almost never charged as a standalone offense, but generally is added to a list of charges. Military punishments range from decrease in rank and pay, all the way to dishonorable discharge, which in itself is a hefty price to pay. When you are dishonorably discharged, it really does not matter the degree of school you have accomplished, or what your dreams may be for an outstanding job in the future, the discharge will stick with you for the remainder of your life and hinder you from getting good paying jobs.
