The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian

After reading the book The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, I got a much better understanding of what that title means. When you think of part-time you normally think of having a part-time job when you only work some days but not all the time. Well that is a lot like the life of the main character in this story. Throughout the book, Junior manages to be “half Indian” and “half white.” He says “ It was like being Indian was my job.” How could someone be “half Indian” and “half white?”

If you have ever moved to new town, or changed schools, then you probably have a pretty good idea how Junior felt throughout the book. After Mr. P talks Junior into getting out of the REZ

She told him that she was protesting the treatment of homeless people in this country and instead for candy she was raising money when she went trick or treating. Of course Junior did not want Penelope to think that he was poor he made up a quick lie that he was dressed like that to protest the treatment of homeless Native Americans in this country. I think that this is a great example of Junior having to play the part of a white person during the book. He knew that he was only wearing those clothes because that’s all he had and he was not really protesting the treatment of homeless Native Americans.

When Junior says that he is “half Indian” it is probably while he attends school at Reardan. He will always be Indian because that is his Native Language, but attending a school with only white people he tries to hide his Indian side and just act white. But as poor as his is, sometimes its hard to hide. When junior says that he is “half white” its when he is back on the REZ. I think that means that he misses how the white people are, he misses how he acts when he’s at school, he does not want to be poor, he does not like getting picked on all the time. And at Reardan no one knows he’s poor, and no on picks on him because he is just like everyone else. Even though Junior knows that “lies have very short shelf lives” he wants to fit in and not stand out like he did back on the REZ. He does not want to be known as the poor
