Odd Job 4 American Revolution Though often portrayed as a moderate effort to remove British control, the American Revolution was radical in the ideals established throughout the revolution. The American Revolution had significant effects on American society as a whole radically changing certain aspects including its social, political, economic, and religious contexts. Also, the status of women, slaves, and Loyalists were radically changed through this endeavor. No longer under the Navigation Acts, their economy was self-reliant. Wood states, “That the Revolution ushered in a new America no longer hampered by habits of difference, feelings of inferiority, or hesitations about economic advancement” (IH 140). This independence reshaped America’s economy radically.
Women and slaves earned certain freedoms through these radical ideals that all men are created equal, and these freedoms were truly earned through their valiant efforts on the warfront. Examples of this are “a frontier woman who beat off an Indian attack” and the slave Pompey who stormed “the British fortress at Stony Point” (IH 160). As a result of American victory, “Women were granted new legal rights, such as the right to divorce, the right to hold property separately, and the right to engage in business deals and contracts without the presence of their husbands deemed necessary” that were previously perceived as unnecessary ( “Slavery went from a national institution to one determined by region” with the slave industry virtually being abolished in the North ( The Revolution and its recurrent ideas of liberty and equality proclaimed by the revolutionaries opened the door for and inspired women and slaves to campaign further for their rights in society, which they would later earn in America in the twentieth
