Stress is a response to a factor or situation that negatively affects the physical, emotional, or psychological existence of a person. Every human being at some point in their lives is affected by stress. Stress is good in small quantities as it motivates a person making him/her more productive. However, too much stress is detrimental to a person. It is a common problem being faced every day that can affect all aspects of your life. One behavior that it can affect is eating habits. “Research indicates that when stressed, the amount and type of food chosen differ based on sex, age, type of stressor, and restraint level of that individual [1].” People can be attracted to foods because of a combination of needs. Many motivations behind our selection of foods-particularly comfort foods-can be a combination of physiological and psychological motivations. Psychological motivation can concurrently influence the pleasure one derives form certain foods.
Our hectic lifestyle or our responsibilities push us, which in turn can be stressful. Stress can result in the competitiveness need to succeed in business, achieve an education, foster social relationships, and win at sports. When stressed many may turn to food for psychological comfort. Stress-induced eating habits over a long period of time can have a negative impact on overall physical and/or mental health.
