There are basics of life that an individual needs regularly to survive. This includes, but is not limited to food, water and shelter. Unfortunately, different circumstances like the lack of means of subsistence, consequently inhibit an individual’s access to these basic needs. For someone to live a healthy life, they have to eat a certain amount of nutrients that the body needs on regular basis. However, the lack of a reliable supply of food or a complete lack of nutritious food, can lead to a variety of diseases and in some cases can lead to death.
The term food security has been interpreted to mean different things over the years. All of the explanations revolved around the state of having reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food enough to meet energy and nutrient requirements. This could be at the global, national, community, or household level. The World Food Summit of 1996 defined food security as existing “when all people at all times have access to sufficient, safe, nutritious food to maintain a healthy and active life” (Lifland, 2012).
Food insecurity has multiple negative impacts on an individual’s health physically, mentally in addition to emotionally. Food insecurity was found to be related to anxiety and depression to mothers and their affect children.
