Analyse and evaluate the major theories of physical, social and emotional, cognitive, sensory and language development in relation to the development of children from birth to three years. Do they apply to all children’s development?
This essay will be analysing and evaluating the major theories of development in relation to the development of children aged from birth to three years, and whether the theories apply to all children’s development.
The physical development of children from birth to three years is explored by Freud, whose work consisted of the psychosexual development and offered explanations to unconscious thoughts and desires. Freud believed that humans had a psyche composed in three parts which controlled behaviour; the id, ego, and superego. The id is the part of the mind which has no inhibitions and is controlled by our desires with no thoughts of the consequences, for example, a newborn baby is governed by its own basic needs for milk and nourishment. The id is in conflict with the superego which is the morality perspective and is developed later on in childhood, when children become less egocentric. The ego is the in-between of the two and tries to stay in control by indulging in some of the id’s desires whilst also maintaining its morals. The ego is developed after the id and occurs within the first few months, an example of a baby developing the ego is learning that by giggling the baby will receive more attention.
