America's decision to use the atomic bomb on Japan was only done to assert our position over the Soviet Union, and Japan's surrender was only an extra accomplishment of the attack. During the years 1939 to 1947, numerous conferences were held to discuss diplomatic matters, and the strive towards getting Japan to accept an unconditional surrender. The Japanese had already been weakened, and the military predicted that they would eventually be forced to surrender in a short amount of time. Even the scientists who worked on the atomic bomb agreed that it was unnecessary to drop the bomb on Japan, since their surrender would be evident in the near future. Military officials who were already angry with Japan's conduct of war had predicted that Japan would be forced to surrender whether America dropped the atomic bomb, or not. This anger was depicted in events such as the Internment of Japanese-Americans towards the west coast, and Japan's horrible war conduct was shown in their fighting techniques, for example: Kamikaze pilots. In 1947, Stimson who was the secretary of war at the time, declared that the war would not have met its end until 1946 if the atomic bomb had not been dropped. (Doc.A) As Secretary of War, Stimson took direct personal control of the entire atomic bomb project, and closely supervised the Manhattan Project. Both Roosevelt and Truman followed Stimson's advice on every aspect of the bomb, and Stimson often overruled military officers when they opposed his views. Even American war commanders agreed that dropping the atomic bomb ended the war quickly, yet they knew that Japan's offensive front was already exhausted, and would have eventually been defeated without the use of the bomb. (Doc. B) Therefore, the United States ultimately did not drop the atomic bomb to defeat the Japanese. Since victory was already evident, the dropping of the bomb was done only to scare Russia.
