Auditory and Visual Processing Disorder

Often within classroom environments, as well as at home, children learn through visual and auditory perception. Visual and auditory processing are key ways to learn; they are used for recognizing and interpreting information taken from the two senses of sound as well as sight. So clearly it is understood that having this disorder can make it a bit more difficult and troublesome to learn through vision and hearing, but definitely not impossible.

This results in difficulties such as being able to visually see the difference between similar shapes, letters as well as objects. It will also affect the ability to notice the similarities and differences seen between patterns, colors and shapes. With all of these difficulties, it makes it hardly bearable for students to keep up with their classmates and learn the information visually. A few helpful suggestions that can be used to effectively help a student with this disorder, are clearly spacing words as well as problems on a page.
Visual Figure-Ground Discrimination is “discriminating a shape or printed character from its background.” (NCLD Editorial Team, 2014) With this, the difficulties include seeing images within a competing background as well as finding a certain piece of information on a page that is filled with other numbers and words, making it a harder process to find the needed information and not being able to focus on it. A few tips include engaging in challenges that ask the student to find items. An example of this would be the books/games called “Where’s Waldo?” It may also be useful to highlight important information while reading along. (NCLD Editorial Team, 2014)
Visual Sequencing is the “ability to see and distinguish the order of symbols, words or images.” (NCLD Editorial Team, 2014) The difficulties that are seen with visual sequencing are skipping over lines while reading as well as re-reading the same line and reversing letters
