Effective Communication is essential to the success of all businesses however, due to the ever-changing nature of workplaces today effective communication is becoming increasingly difficult and hinged by many barriers, which cause the senders intended meaning to be misconstrued by the receiver. Although Communication within Organisations will never be completely barrier free, many facile solutions can be implemented to facilitate the effects these barriers have.

The advantages of using email to communicate with team members who are away from the main office are also its disadvantages. Despite James’s team members having both an Internet capable laptop and mobile phone they need to log on to their email to receive notification of new email unlike other communication channels such as voicemail or text message whereby the team members are immediately notified. In other words, if the team members are busy working in different locations and dealing with the pre-Christmas rush, as in this instance, the chances of them receiving the email are slim and could be contributed to no Internet signal or being over-worked. James has failed to recognise that the lack of feedback is a sign that communication is ineffective.

Communication Scholars classify noise into three different categories: external (noise in the surrounding environment), internal (thoughts or feelings that interfere with the communication), and semantic (words are not well-chosen or are used incorrectly).
