The plastic surgery industry is a billion dollar industry that is taking over society and seeping into our lives through many different ways whether we realize it or not. The pressure from the plastic surgery industry affects people on many different levels such as psychological, economical, and social. Psychologists say that the cultural pressures are so strong and so unrealistic with how men and women are supposed to look that they are working to figure this problem out and searching for a solution to make sure people are not harmed by this. People need to work to understand that plastic surgery is not necessary and there isn’t an idealistic image. Psychologists are fearful since plastic surgery is becoming so common that patients do not fully understand the potential risks of some of the procedures. Just like any medical related surgery, it needs to be taken seriously. Psychiatrists have also noted that the stress of the surgery can cause sleep problems, and the recovery can involve severe pain, exhaustion, and swelling which can lead to depression. Society needs to come together to stop the media from shoving the unrealistic images at people because it is harming people mentally and potentially physically. A start would be avoiding advertisements that only promote stick thin models or photo shop them, such as Victoria’s Secret catalogs or commercials.
