Ghirardo points out that the relationship between modern architecture and fascism is not as clear as recent analysis might have it. What do you think was the aspiration for modern 'rational' architecture and why would it be associated with socialist politics? Further, why was there such a close relationship between modern architecture and fascism in Italy in the pre-war years, but not in germany?

Rationalism was one of the key movements in Italy after world war one. It set about broadening the scope of modern architecture by formulating clear strategies for dealing with the industrialisation and urbanisation of Italy . Fascism as a concept was advertised as something new and interesting, the next best thing after the liberal democrats that had come before it, but the it would claim to sink its roots deep in Italian history, especially Roman history. Italian fascists praised a building or a program for its modernity then complemented it highly on having its design set in Italian traditions.

. Rationalism, much like fascism, was not a coherent movement. They where split into two parts, the northern and southern rationalists, and each had substantially different focuses and ideologies on style. Even within the same regions there was clear variations, Libera even said “there was not a clear notion, a clear idea for out movement”. What united the Rationalists where their opposition to the other architects of the time wrote “Despite the actual reluctance to adhere to the new canon, the Rationalists sought unity in their polemics”.
