Heneman, Judge, & Kammeyer-Mueller (2012) discuss the logic of prediction when selecting candidates for a position. Past performance predicts future performance; so in assessing candidates, it is essential to review past actions in order to get a feel for the applicant’s potential future performance (Heneman, Judge, & Kammeyer-Mueller, 2012). This is why is it also crucial to ensure in the recruitment phase, that the position has been accurately analyzed, that proper KSAOs have been assigned to a position, and that the KSAOs are adequately able to be assessed. The tools available to assess candidates further include resumes scans at the basic level, biodata evaluations, reference and background screenings, various forms of interviews, personality assessments, job previews and or performance testing’s (Heneman, Judge, & Kammeyer-Mueller, 2012). In the assessment of candidates, ethical and legal considerations will arise as well so carefully planning the selection plan will serve as a protection for an organization.
Initial Assessment Pre-employment screenings are beneficial in reducing the number of candidates to assess thus reducing the costs of the hiring process (Heneman, Judge, & Kammeyer-Mueller, 2012). Methods available to pre-screen candidates include application blanks, resume screening, biodata evaluations, reference reporting, and initial interviews (Heneman, Judge, & Kammeyer-Mueller, 2012). These processes assist in weeding out applicants who are not serious or qualified for a position.
Application Blanks Application blanks serve to quickly assess if a candidate has the desired background, education, experience, or skills required for a position. Questions often relate to the minimum educational requirements, years of experience needed, or training or work experience (Heneman, Judge, & Kammeyer-Mueller, 2012). Application blanks compliment resumes in that they serve to verify the accuracy of information presented in resumes
