Art is defined as “The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power” ("Oxford Dictionary" ). It is also used to describe “the various branches of creative activity, such as music, literature, and dance” (Oxford Dictionary” ). Over the course of time, art has been used to express cultural differences, socioeconomic views, religious themes, and even political ideals. Art has been in existence, in one form or another, for thousands of years. No matter what the time period, art is the expression of society and is reflective of the events that occur in that period. For most artists, art is at the core of their lives. Art is an extension of their imagination. They spend the majority of their life thinking about art. They are resilient and understand that success is not an overnight occurrence and that it involves many years of hard work (Farthing ). Over the years I have heard of many artist and composers but I will admit that I had never taken the time to learn very much about them. I could normally tell the difference between the paintings of artist such as Picasso, Rembrandt, Van Gogh, and Monet, but my knowledge of art stopped at that point. It was through the research for this paper that I began to understand the different styles of art and the different time periods associated with each one. There were two particular periods that stood out to me the most. I especially enjoyed learning more about the Renaissance and the Impressionism/Post-Impressionism periods. The Renaissance period was an age of rebirth, a period of new discoveries. Great developments were being made not only in art, but also in religion, intellect, and science. There were many great artists that came out of the Renaissance. Leonardo da Vinci is singled out as perhaps the best representation of that period. He may very well be considered one of the best in all of history. Da Vinci did more than create some of the greatest art masterpieces of all times. He was a sculptor, painter,
