To most university students stress is a regular feeling in one’s life. Not only is the constant bombardment of assignments and exams enough to make anyone dizzy, it is also a period of immense social growth and development. This is especially true for first year students. A new learning environment, new friends, and a new sense of responsibility can all take a toll on one’s quality of life. Although stress is usually positive and helps motivate people, prolonged stress wear a person down both physically and emotionally. Hans Selye described stress as the result of the body experiencing demands that cause physiological responses. He defined two types of stress: eustress and distress. The presence of stress in my life has made these two relievers an important part in maintaining optimal arousal levels. When midterms are in full force and students spend most of their time studying in their room or the library, finding stress relief can appear impossible. However, one reliable stress reliever is food. Vast amounts of cookies, candy, chips and a variety of soft drinks find their way to the student’s desk. Although a diet rich in omega 3 fatty acids, as well as plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains is well known provide the nutrition for long term studying success, these are usually absent. This is because food rich in saturated fats, salt and simple sugars taste better. They also provide a temporary rush from the blood sugar boost. When everything else seems to be at its worst and time is pressing, food provides a small escape; it is a way to keep studying but have a small amount of enjoyment. Studies show that eating foods that are high in fat and sugar cause a dopamine release in areas of the brain that are also associated with drug use (Volkow, 2011). Food essentially gives people a high. This explains why first year students tend to gain weight. In stressful situations, people tend to be more lenient in regards to their health. Although I am normally healthy, during midterms I find my garbage can begins to fill with chocolate bar wrappers and chip bags, while my bottle bin quickly fills with energy drink cans
