Watching TV: The electronic professor “Stop watching television and go do something productive!” My mother would shout angrily when I would watch the “The Simpsons.” As mentioned in the article "Watching TV Makes You Smarter," Steven Johnson argued that 21st Century television shows develop complicated and more challenging narratives than those of an earlier time and offer viewers extra intellectual stimulation. Consequently television programming today reveals an astonishing narrative sophistication with unique plots increasing the viewer’s intellectual demands. Likewise Johnson points out multithreading in television shows like "24" and "apprentice", indicating it allows the viewer to integrate greater information than they would have a few decades ago watching a similar show. Above all the violence and the cultural stereotypes, to recognize ''24,'' meanwhile the viewer has to pay close attention, make implications, while tracing altering character relationships. Furthermore multithreading is embedded even into the simplest reality shows like the “Rock of Love” and “Flavor of Love” as my experience proves from watching these reality love shows. For instance the girls are fighting for the love of these male musicians, having to lie, trick each other, gossip, and do whatever it takes to win. However this kind of television programming generally is observed by viewers incapable or reluctant to comprehend complicated intellectual shows, unwittingly the viewer still enhances their analyzing and counter-arguing skills through forecasting possible outcomes. To point out Johnson indicates that the human mind likes advanced information, “But the mind also likes to be challenged; there’s real pleasure to be found in solving puzzles, detecting patterns or unpacking a complex narrative system” (228). As a result it means that even a simple television show will end up being intellectually stimulating
