“Why should we go into space? What is the justification for spending all the effort and money on getting a few lumps of moon rocks? Aren’t there better causes here on Earth?”- Stephen Hawking. Space is the everlasting, ever growing place where we happen to reside. From the beginning of intelligent life here on Earth, we have wanted to learn. Whether it be simply constructing a fire, or solving the riddles that still puzzle us to this day. Many of the questions we still have are pertaining to space. Are we alone? How did we get here? Where are we going? Many answers can come from exploring space. Getting a “few lumps of moon rock” can answer so many questions we asked ourselves for millennia. On July 20, 1969 Neil Armstrong’s words echoed for generation, “That’s one small step for man, but one giant leap for mankind.” He was the first man to walk on the moon. The 80’s brought new information with the satellites and started filling space (Brief). The International Space Station Research Lab, better known as I.S.S., started on November 20, 1998 and has grown ever since. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration, NASA, is the most well-known space organization in the country. Funding of NASA is at an all-time low. NASA’s budget for the year 2013 was $5 billion (Budget). Compare this to the $716 billion National Defense Budget (Plumer). I am not saying that we need to drastically cut the defense budget. I am just putting the budget into perspective. NASA’s headquarters are in Washington D.C., with many bases around the country. Most notable bases are located in Cape Canaveral, Florida and the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. There are 18,000 employees in NASA headquarters and stated by NASA there are around 300,000 through constructors and other jobs. When people think “NASA”, they think the moon, Mars, or maybe just space. I myself knew NASA did other things, I just did not know what. They mainly work in space.
